1 Chronicles 21:2

Posted on 18 May at 11:31

And Dauid saide to Ioab, and to the rulers of the people, Goe, number Israel from Beer-sheba eueu to Dan: and bring the number of them to me, that I may know it. 1 Chronicles 21:2 (KJV)

Context: The book of 1 Chronicles is a historical account that focuses on the lineage of Israel and the reign of King David. Chapter 21 specifically addresses a significant event in David’s life that resulted in grave consequences for Israel.

David’s Command: In verse 2 we see David issuing a directive to Joab, the commander of his army, and the rulers of the people. He instructs them to conduct a census of Israel from Beersheba (the southernmost point of Israel) to Dan (the northernmost point). David’s purpose for this census is to ascertain the total number of people in the kingdom.

The Significance of the Census: The act of taking a census may seem ordinary, but in this context it reveals David’s misplaced trust and pride. The census was not inherently sinful, as God had commanded similar counts in the past (e.g., Numbers 1:2‑3). However, David’s motive was problematic; his desire to know the number of his people indicates reliance on military might and the size of his army rather than on God. Some accounts note that his pride was incited by Satan.

Joab’s Warning: Joab, recognizing the potential danger in David’s command, expressed his concern in the subsequent verses (1 Chronicles 21:3‑4). He cautioned David against proceeding, acknowledging that such an action would bring about negative consequences and incur God’s wrath.

The Sin and Consequences: Despite Joab’s warning, David persists with the census, and his actions are ultimately considered sinful in the eyes of God. As a result, the Lord brings judgment upon Israel, presenting David with three options for punishment (1 Chronicles 21:9‑12). David chooses a three‑day plague, resulting in the death of seventy thousand men.

David’s Repentance and God’s Mercy: After witnessing the devastating effects of his sin, David acknowledges his wrongdoing and repents before God (1 Chronicles 21:16‑17). God, in His mercy, instructs the prophet Gad to deliver a message to David, providing a means of atonement through sacrifices and establishing an altar on the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite (1 Chronicles 21:18‑28).

The Threshing Floor of Ornan: The significance of the location where David builds the altar is noteworthy. The site eventually becomes the place where Solomon constructs the temple (2 Chronicles 3:1). It signifies God’s provision and the establishment of a permanent dwelling place for His presence among His people.
