1 Chronicles 21:11

So Gad came to Dauid, and said vnto him, Thus saith the Lord, Choose thee 1 Chronicles 21:11 (KJV)

Before studying the specific verse, it is essential to understand the broader context of 1 Chronicles 21. This chapter records King David’s sin of numbering the people of Israel, an act that displeased the Lord and brought a divine plague upon the nation. In verse 11 the prophet Gad appears as the messenger of the Lord, delivering a pivotal instruction to David.

Prior to verse 11 the Lord had presented David with three possible punishments for his transgression: three years of famine, three months of devastation by enemies, or three days of a deadly plague (see 1 Chronicles 21:9‑10). Verse 11 therefore emphasizes David’s responsibility to make a choice. The phrase “Choose thee” highlights the importance of human agency and decision‑making even amid divine judgment.

David’s decision is central to the narrative. The simple command “Choose thee” forces the king to confront the consequences of his actions and to determine the fate of Israel. His response reveals his character, his relationship with God, and the principle of free will that undergirds biblical teaching. The gravity of this choice underscores how personal decisions can affect an entire people.

While David must choose, the passage also affirms God’s sovereignty. The options presented were part of God’s purposeful plan to discipline and teach David. Even as the king exercises responsibility, the ultimate control remains with the Lord, illustrating the delicate balance between human responsibility and divine authority.

From this account we learn how to approach our own choices. By seeking God’s guidance through prayer, diligent study of Scripture, wise counsel, and reliance on the Holy Spirit, we can align our decisions with His will. The study of this verse also reminds us to examine the broader biblical context, compare translations, and consult trusted commentaries to gain deeper insight into God’s instruction.
