1 Chronicles 21:24

In this verse, we find King David interacting with a Jebusite named Ornan (also known as Araunah) regarding the purchase of a threshing floor, which David intended to use as an altar to offer burnt offerings to the Lord. This event took place during a time when God’s anger had been aroused against Israel because David had ordered a census of the people, a decision that was displeasing to God (1 Chronicles 21:1). As a result, God sent a pestilence upon Israel. However, after recognising his wrongdoing, David repented and pleaded for God’s mercy (1 Chronicles 21:8-17).

As the angel of the Lord stood ready to destroy Jerusalem, God commanded the angel to withhold his hand. At that moment, David saw the angel and was filled with fear and humility before God (1 Chronicles 21:16). David, recognising the severity of the situation and the need for reconciliation, sought to offer burnt offerings to God to atone for his sin and seek His forgiveness.

When David approached Ornan, he offered to purchase the threshing floor, emphasising that he would not take it for free or offer burnt offerings without cost. This demonstrates David’s desire to offer a sacrifice that was both sincere and meaningful. He wanted to bear the full expense himself and not rely on the generosity of another. David understood the importance of wholehearted dedication to God and recognised that worship and sacrifice should come at a personal cost.

• The consequences of sin:David’s decision to count the people without God’s command resulted in dire consequences for the nation. It reminds us of the seriousness of sin and the need for repentance when we go astray.
• Repentance and seeking God’s forgiveness:David’s response after realising his mistake is a powerful example of repentance. He acknowledged his sin, sought God’s mercy, and took steps to restore his relationship with God. We should follow David’s example by confessing our sins and seeking God’s forgiveness when we stumble.
• Worship with a cost:David’s determination to pay the full price for the threshing floor teaches us the importance of offering our best to God. True worship requires sacrifice, not just in terms of material possessions, but also in our hearts and lives. We are called to give ourselves completely to God, holding nothing back.
• God’s mercy and grace:Despite David’s sin, God showed him mercy and relented from bringing further destruction upon Jerusalem. This serves as a reminder of God’s abundant grace and willingness to forgive those who genuinely repent and turn to Him.
