1 Chronicles 22:5
And Dauid said, Solomon my sonne is yong and tender, and the house that is to be builded for the Lord, must be exceeding magnificall, of fame and of glory throughout all countreys: I will therefore now make preparation for it. So Dauid prepared abundantly before his death. 1 Chronicles 22:5 (KJV)
Historical Context: First, let us understand the background of this verse. King David longed to build a magnificent temple for the Lord, but God, through the prophet Nathan, told him that he would not be the one to construct it; his son Solomon would carry out the work (1 Chronicles 17:1‑15). Although David would not be the builder, he took it upon himself to make extensive preparations for the temple.
Solomon’s Youth and the Magnificence of the Temple: In the verse David notes that Solomon is “young and tender,” emphasizing his tender age and inexperience. He also describes the future house as “exceeding magnifical, of fame and of glory throughout all countries,” indicating that the temple must reflect God’s splendor and be renowned far and wide.
David’s Preparation: In response to this task, David resolved to gather abundant resources before his death. The subsequent verses record that he collected large quantities of gold, silver, bronze, iron, and precious stones (1 Chronicles 22:14) and organized skilled craftsmen (1 Chronicles 22:15). His preparations demonstrate deep reverence for God and a commitment to ensure Solomon’s success.
“And David said, The house of the LORD which I prepare for my son Solomon, is great: for the LORD is great, and the greatness thereof exceedeth the heavens.”
Lessons and Applications:
- Diligence and Excellence in Worship – David’s desire for a magnificent temple teaches us to offer our best to God in worship. Though we no longer build a physical temple, we should pursue excellence in every aspect of our lives, offering time, talent, and resources in service to Him.
- Preparing the Way for Future Generations – David’s preparations were a legacy for Solomon and for future generations. Likewise, we are called to invest spiritually, emotionally, and practically in those who follow us, leaving a strong foundation.
- Recognising God’s Timing – David accepted that Solomon, not he, would build the temple. We must trust God’s timing when He places our dreams in the hands of others.
- Stewardship – The careful gathering and management of materials illustrate responsible stewardship of the resources God entrusts to us, including possessions, skills, and opportunities.
Overall, 1 Chronicles 22:5 showcases David’s dedication to honoring God through abundant preparation, a vision of grandeur, and a faithful legacy. It encourages worship with excellence, investment in future generations, trust in God’s timing, and faithful stewardship of all He provides.
