1 Chronicles 23:13

Posted on 18 May at 11:31

The sonnes of Amram: Aaron and Moses: and Aaron was separated, that he should sanctifie the most holy things, he and his sonnes for euer, to burne incense before the Lord, to minister vnto him, and to blesse in his Name for euer. 1 Chronicles 23:13 (KJV)

Background: Amram was the father of Aaron and Moses and belonged to the tribe of Levi. Aaron became the first high priest of Israel, while Moses was chosen by God to lead the Israelites out of Egyptian slavery and to receive the Ten Commandments on Mount Sinai. Their families played pivotal roles in Israel’s history and in the establishment of worship.

Separation for Holiness: The verse highlights that Aaron was separated for a special purpose. He and his sons were set apart by God to sanctify the most holy things, a consecration that signified their unique priestly role. As high priest, Aaron was responsible for handling the most holy things, including the burning of incense before the Lord.

The Duties of Aaron and His Sons: The passage records three primary responsibilities. First, they were to burn incense before the Lord, a symbolic act representing the prayers of the people ascending to God. Second, they were to minister unto God, conducting the rituals and ceremonies prescribed for Israel’s worship. Third, they were entrusted to bless the people in the name of the Lord, invoking divine favor and protection.

Forever Covenant: The verse concludes by emphasizing that this separation and the associated responsibilities were intended to be perpetual. The covenant between God and the priestly lineage of Aaron was to endure from generation to generation, conditional upon the priests’ faithfulness in carrying out their duties.

Overall Significance: This passage underscores the unique calling of Aaron and his descendants as God’s chosen priesthood. It stresses the importance of sanctification, consecration, and the everlasting covenant relationship between God and His priests, reminding believers of the weight of holy service and the blessings that flow from faithful obedience.
