1 Chronicles 26:15
To Obed-Edom Southward, and to his sonnes, the house of Asuppim. 1 Chronicles 26:15 (KJV)
The book of 1 Chronicles is part of the Old Testament and serves as a historical record of the people of Israel, particularly the genealogies and the establishment of temple worship under King David. Chapter 26 focuses on the divisions of the gatekeepers, those responsible for guarding the entrances of the temple. Obed‑edom was a Levite and a gatekeeper, responsible for guarding the South gate of the temple. He is mentioned multiple times in the Bible, particularly in relation to the Ark of the Covenant. When King David initially attempted to bring the Ark of the Covenant to Jerusalem, there was an incident where Uzzah, one of the sons of Abinadab, died while trying to stabilize the Ark. This caused David to become fearful, so he left the Ark at the house of Obed‑edom for a period of time. During that time, Obed‑edom and his household were greatly blessed (2 Samuel 6:1‑12). The “house of Asuppim” refers to a storage place or a chamber within the temple.
Faithfulness in service: Obed‑edom faithfully served as a gatekeeper in the temple. Despite the humble nature of his role, he carried out his responsibilities diligently. It is important to note that no task is insignificant in the kingdom of God. Obed‑edom’s example encourages us to be faithful in whatever roles or responsibilities we have been given, knowing that our service to God matters.
Blessings of God: When the Ark of the Covenant was in Obed‑edom’s house, his entire household was blessed. This serves as a reminder that God honors faithfulness and blesses those who honor Him. Obed‑edom’s story encourages us to trust in God’s provision and promises, knowing that He is able to bless and prosper us in unexpected ways.
Temporary assignments: Obed‑edom’s responsibility of guarding the Ark was a temporary assignment. Sometimes, God may place us in certain roles or situations for a specific period of time. It is essential to be faithful and diligent in those assignments, even if they are temporary, as they can be stepping stones to greater things in God’s plan for our lives.
God’s presence: Obed‑edom’s household experienced blessings because the Ark of the Covenant, representing God’s presence, was with them. Similarly, as believers, we have the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit. We can draw encouragement from Obed‑edom’s story, knowing that God’s presence brings blessings and favour into our lives when we honour and seek Him.
