1 Chronicles 27:26

Posted on 18 May at 11:31

“And over them that did the work of the field for tillage of the ground was Ezri the son of Chelub.”

Chronicles is a book found in the Old Testament, specifically part of the historical books. It provides a detailed account of the genealogy, reigns of kings, and various events in the history of Israel. The verse you mentioned is a part of a chapter that lists the divisions and assignments of different leaders and officials in King David’s kingdom.

In this verse, we are introduced to Ezri, the son of Chelub. He was appointed to oversee those who worked in the field for the purpose of cultivating the ground. The specific work mentioned here is “tillage,” which refers to the preparation and cultivation of the soil for planting crops. This verse highlights an important aspect of the kingdom of Israel during King David’s reign. It demonstrates that the responsibilities within the kingdom were carefully allocated and organised. King David recognised the significance of having skilled individuals overseeing various tasks to ensure the proper functioning of society.

From a broader perspective, this verse emphasises the importance of work and the value of agriculture. It recognises that tilling the ground and cultivating crops were essential for the sustenance and well-being of the nation. It also implies that every task, regardless of its nature, holds significance in contributing to the overall functioning of society.

Additionally, we can draw a spiritual lesson from this verse. In the Bible, agricultural imagery is often used to convey spiritual truths. Jesus, for example, referred to Himself as the “true vine,” and believers as the branches (John 15:1-8). This analogy signifies the importance of our connection to Christ, just as crops rely on the soil for nourishment. In a similar way, we can understand that just as Ezri was responsible for the work of the field, we, as believers, have been given responsibilities within the body of Christ. Each individual has unique gifts, talents, and callings that contribute to the overall well-being and growth of the church and the advancement of God’s kingdom.

“1 Corinthians 12:4-6 (NIV) affirms this concept:“There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them. There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. There are different kinds of working, but in all of them and in everyone it is the same God at work.” Therefore, this verse from 1 Chronicles reminds us of the importance of recognising and embracing our individual roles within the body of Christ. Whether our responsibilities are seemingly significant or mundane, we should approach them with diligence and a desire to honour God. By faithfully fulfilling our tasks, we can contribute to the greater purpose of God’s kingdom and bring glory to Him.

In conclusion, 1 Chronicles 27:26 highlights the organisational structure within King David’s kingdom, specifically focusing on the appointment of Ezri to oversee the field workers. It reminds us of the significance of work, the importance of every individual’s contribution, and the spiritual lesson of embracing our unique roles within the body of Christ.
