1 Chronicles 27:34

Posted on 18 May at 11:31

And after Ahitophel, was Iehoiada the sonne of Benaiah, and Abiathar: and the general of the Kings armie was Ioab. 1 Chronicles 27:34 (KJV)

Context: This verse is part of the concluding chapter of 1 Chronicles, which primarily focuses on the organization and administration of David’s kingdom. In this particular verse, we encounter a list of individuals who held important positions in King David’s government and military.

Ahithophel: Ahithophel was a renowned counselor and advisor to King David, known for his wisdom and insight. However, he eventually betrayed David and sided with David’s son, Absalom, during the rebellion (2 Samuel 15:31). This act proved to be disastrous, as Ahithophel’s counsel was highly regarded. Yet, his betrayal ultimately fulfilled the prophecy that God had given to David regarding his close companions rising against him.

Jehoiada the son of Benaiah: Following Ahithophel, Jehoiada, the son of Benaiah, is mentioned. There is limited information available about this specific individual in the Bible, but the mention of his name suggests that he likely held a significant position in David’s administration or military.

Abiathar: Abiathar was a priest who served alongside Zadok during David’s reign. He was a descendant of Eli and played a prominent role during David’s earlier years as king. Later, during Absalom’s rebellion, Abiathor remained loyal to David while Zadok also remained loyal to David (2 Samuel 15:24-29). After the rebellion was crushed, Solomon banished Abiathar to his hometown, fulfilling the word of the Lord that judgment would come upon Eli’s house (1 Kings 2:26-27).

Joab: Joab, the nephew of King David, served as the commander of David’s army throughout his reign. He played a pivotal role in several military campaigns and battles, and his loyalty to David was unquestionable. However, Joab’s actions were not always righteous, as he carried out David’s orders to kill Uriah the Hittite, Bathsheba’s husband (2 Samuel 11:14-17). Joab also faced consequences for his actions later in life, as David instructed his son Solomon to deal with Joab due to his treacherous acts (1 Kings 2:5-6).

In this verse, we see a snapshot of the key figures within David’s government and military structure. Each person mentioned played a unique role, and their inclusion emphasizes the importance of their positions in supporting David’s rule. It also highlights the complexities and challenges that David faced within his kingdom, including instances of betrayal and the consequences of unrighteous actions.
