1 Chronicles 29:12

Posted on 18 May at 11:32

Both riches, and honour come of thee, and thou reignest ouer all, and in thine hand is power and might, and in thine hand it is to make great, and to giue strength vnto all. 1 Chronicles 29:12 (KJV)

The book of 1 Chronicles records Israel’s history, emphasizing the genealogies and the establishment of the Davidic dynasty. Chapter 29 focuses on King David’s preparations for the temple and his prayer of dedication. In verse 12 David praises God for His greatness and sovereignty, acknowledging that every blessing originates from the Lord.

Key Themes

God’s Sovereignty – The verse declares that God “reigneth over all,” affirming His ultimate authority over every aspect of creation. His power and might are in His hand, reminding believers that the universe is under His control.

Source of Riches and Honour – David recognises that both material wealth and honour are gifts from God. This truth calls believers to see every provision and accolade as divine generosity rather than personal achievement.

Ability to Make Great and Give Strength – The passage states that it is in God’s hand “to make great, and to give strength unto all.” It underscores that any exaltation or capability comes from God’s empowering grace.

Relevance and Application

Gratitude and Humility – David’s words model a heart of thankfulness. Believers are encouraged to cultivate gratitude, acknowledging that all they have and are comes from God, and to express humility in response to His blessings.

Trust in God’s Sovereignty – Recognising God’s supreme rule brings comfort in difficult seasons. When circumstances seem uncertain, believers can find peace knowing that the Lord is in control of all events.

Stewardship – Understanding that riches and honour belong to God should shape how we manage resources. Christians are called to steward their gifts responsibly, using them to honour God and bless others.

God’s Empowerment – Just as David trusted God to make great and give strength, believers can seek divine empowerment for the tasks and purposes God has placed before them. Relying on His strength, wisdom, and ability equips us to fulfill our calling.

Studying this verse invites us to reflect on God’s sovereignty, to offer sincere gratitude, and to live lives that honour Him through faithful stewardship and reliance on His empowering grace.
