2 Chronicles 1:13

Posted on 18 May at 11:36

“Then Solomon came from his journey to the high place that was at Gibeon to Jerusalem, from before the tabernacle of the congregation, and reigned over Israel.”

Context:To understand the significance of this verse, it’s essential to grasp the context in which it occurs. 2 Chronicles 1 focuses on Solomon’s ascent to the throne of Israel after the death of his father, King David. Solomon had just completed a journey to Gibeon, where he offered sacrifices to God. During this encounter, God appeared to Solomon and asked him what he desired. Solomon humbly asked for wisdom to govern God’s people.

Solomon’s journey to the high place:The verse states that Solomon came from his journey to the high place at Gibeon. Gibeon was a significant location in ancient Israel and was known for its tabernacle, where the Ark of the Covenant resided before it was brought to Jerusalem by King David. The tabernacle of the congregation mentioned in the verse refers to the place of worship where the Israelites gathered to seek God.

Solomon’s reign:The verse concludes by noting that Solomon reigned over Israel after his journey. This signifies the fulfilment of God’s promise to David that his descendant would sit on the throne and rule over God’s chosen people. Solomon’s reign was marked by prosperity, wisdom, and the construction of the magnificent Temple in Jerusalem.

Lessons to learn:The verse highlights a few lessons that we can derive from Solomon’s story:

  • Seeking God’s presence:Solomon’s journey to the high place at Gibeon reveals his earnest desire to seek God’s presence. It serves as a reminder for us to prioritise seeking God through worship, prayer, and a humble heart.
  • Humility before God:Solomon’s humble request for wisdom demonstrates his recognition of his own limitations and his dependence on God. It teaches us the importance of humility in approaching God and acknowledging our need for His guidance.
  • God’s faithfulness:Solomon’s reign, as mentioned in the verse, signifies God’s faithfulness in fulfilling His promises. This reminds us that God is faithful to His Word and will establish His purposes in our lives when we walk in obedience and seek Him with all our hearts.

Overall, 2 Chronicles 1:13 captures an important moment in Solomon’s life, marking the beginning of his reign as king over Israel. It emphasises the significance of seeking God’s presence, humility before Him, and the faithfulness of God in fulfilling His promises.
