2 Chronicles 3:7

Posted on 18 May at 11:38

“He overlaid also the house, the beams, the posts, and the walls thereof, and the doors thereof, with gold; and graved cherubims on the walls.”

Context:The verse you mentioned is part of the description of the construction of Solomon’s Temple in Jerusalem. In this chapter, the author provides intricate details about the materials and design of the temple, emphasizing the grandeur and magnificence of the structure.

Symbolism of Gold:Gold is a precious metal often associated with value, beauty, and purity. In the context of the temple, the use of gold signifies the importance and holiness of the place where God’s presence would dwell. It represents the glory and majesty of God and the reverence the Israelites had for Him.

Significance of Overlaying:The act of overlaying with gold symbolizes the act of covering or adorning something with a valuable and beautiful substance. By overlaying the house, beams, posts, walls, and doors of the temple with gold, Solomon ensured that every part of the temple reflected the glory and sanctity of God’s presence.

Engraved Cherubim:Cherubim are angelic beings often associated with God’s presence and worship. The engraving of cherubim on the temple walls further enhances the symbolism of holiness and divine presence. These carvings remind the worshippers of God’s heavenly throne room and the spiritual realm that transcends the physical temple.

  • The Importance of Reverence:Just as Solomon adorned the temple with gold and cherubim, believers should approach the presence of God with reverence and awe. Our worship and devotion should reflect the holiness and majesty of God.
  • Offering Our Best to God:The use of gold in the temple construction highlights the principle of offering our best to God. We should not withhold our resources or talents when it comes to serving and honoring God. Just as gold is a precious and valuable material, we should give God our best efforts and resources.
  • God’s Presence in Our Lives:The temple was a physical dwelling place for God’s presence in the Old Testament. As believers today, we are the temple of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19). Therefore, we should strive to keep our lives pure and holy, allowing God’s presence to dwell in us and shine through us.
  • Attention to Detail:The meticulous details described in the construction of the temple remind us of the importance of attention to detail in our spiritual lives. We should not neglect the small things in our walk with God but strive for excellence in all areas of our lives.
