2 Chronicles 5:3
“Wherefore all the men of Israel assembled themselves unto the king in the feast which was in the seventh month.”
Historical Background:The book of 2 Chronicles is a historical account that focuses on the reigns of the kings of Judah, with a particular emphasis on the temple and worship. In this specific chapter, the construction of the temple, which was initiated by King Solomon, has been completed. Now, preparations are being made for the dedication of the temple.
The Feast in the Seventh Month:The verse mentions that the men of Israel assembled themselves to the king in the feast that occurred in the seventh month. This refers to the Feast of Tabernacles (also known as the Feast of Booths or Sukkot), one of the major festivals in Israel. It was held on the 15th day of the seventh month (Tishri) and lasted for seven days. This feast commemorated the Israelites’ journey through the wilderness after their exodus from Egypt and celebrated the abundant harvest.
Significance of the Assembly:The assembly of all the men of Israel in the seventh month at the temple holds great significance. It highlights the unity and participation of the people in the worship and dedication of the newly constructed temple. It symbolises the entire community coming together to honour God and seek His presence. The Feast of Tabernacles was a time of joy and thanksgiving, and the people’s presence at the temple during this occasion demonstrated their commitment to God and His dwelling place among them.
