2 Chronicles 6:2

Posted on 18 May at 11:39

But I haue built an house of habitation for thee, and a place for thy dwelling for euer. 2 Chronicles 6:2 (KJV)

Historical Context: The verse is part of a prayer of King Solomon during the dedication of the temple in Jerusalem. After the completion of the temple, Solomon gathered the people of Israel and offered a prayer to God, acknowledging His faithfulness and expressing his desire for God’s presence to dwell in the temple.

Solomon’s Obedience: Solomon recognised that the temple he had built was not just an ordinary structure, but a house of habitation for God Himself. It was a place where God’s presence would dwell among His people. Solomon’s act of building the temple demonstrated his obedience to God’s command and his desire to honour God.

God’s Eternal Presence: In this verse, Solomon acknowledges that the temple was intended to be a place for God’s dwelling forever. While the physical temple was eventually destroyed in the future by foreign invaders, the sentiment behind Solomon’s prayer remains significant. The temple symbolised the dwelling place of God among His people, and it foreshadowed the ultimate fulfilment of God’s presence among humanity through Jesus Christ.

God’s Dwelling Among His People: The construction of the temple in Jerusalem was a significant event in Israel’s history. It represented a central place of worship and an assurance of God’s presence in their midst. The temple served as a reminder that God desired to dwell among His people and have a relationship with them.

Application for Today: Although the physical temple in Jerusalem no longer exists, the principle of God’s desire to dwell among His people remains unchanged. In the New Testament, believers are referred to as the temple of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19). God’s presence dwells within individual believers through the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. As Christians, we are called to honour God and live in obedience to Him, recognising that our bodies are now the dwelling place of God’s Spirit.

Seeking God’s Presence: Solomon’s prayer and the dedication of the temple remind us of the importance of seeking God’s presence in our lives. We should desire to have an intimate relationship with God, inviting Him to dwell in our hearts and lives. Just as Solomon dedicated the temple to God, we can dedicate ourselves to God and offer our lives as a living sacrifice (Romans 12:1).

Longing for the Eternal City: While the temple in Jerusalem was a physical structure, it also pointed to a greater reality. The Bible speaks of a future eternal city, the New Jerusalem, where God will dwell with His people forever (Revelation 21:1-4). The completion of the temple in Solomon’s time was a foreshadowing of this future reality, reminding us of our hope and longing for the eternal dwelling place with God.

In conclusion, 2 Chronicles 6:2 highlights Solomon’s recognition of the temple as a house of habitation for God’s eternal presence. It teaches us about God’s desire to dwell among His people and the importance of seeking His presence in our lives. Additionally, it points us towards the ultimate fulfilment of God’s dwelling with humanity in the future eternal city.
