2 Chronicles 9:15

Posted on 18 May at 11:39

And king Solomon made two hundred targets of beaten gold: sixe hundred shekels of beaten gold went to one target. 2 Chronicles 9:15 (KJV)

This verse is part of the description of King Solomon’s wealth and splendor, particularly focusing on his extensive military equipment. To understand the significance of this verse, let’s explore its context and the broader themes of the passage.

Historical Background: 2 Chronicles 9:15 is found in the chapter that describes the visit of the Queen of Sheba to King Solomon. She had heard of Solomon’s wisdom and fame and came to test him with hard questions (2 Chronicles 9:1). Impressed by Solomon’s wisdom, his wealth, and the magnificence of his kingdom, the Queen of Sheba praised the Lord and blessed Solomon (2 Chronicles 9:7‑8).

Symbolism of the Shields: In this verse, it is mentioned that Solomon made two hundred shields of beaten gold. Shields were used for protection in battle, and these golden shields symbolize the wealth and prosperity of Solomon’s kingdom. They also reflect the security and strength that the nation enjoyed under Solomon’s reign.

Abundance and Generosity: The verse further states that six hundred shekels of gold went to the making of each shield, indicating the amount of gold used to create each shield. The mention of such a large quantity of gold highlights the abundance and prosperity of Solomon’s kingdom. It also demonstrates Solomon’s ability to mobilize vast resources and his generosity in investing them in the construction of military equipment.

Symbolic Meaning: While this verse primarily focuses on Solomon’s wealth and military power, we can also draw some spiritual insights from it. The lavishness of Solomon’s kingdom and the abundance of gold can serve as a reminder that God blesses and prospers those who walk in obedience to Him. However, it is crucial to note that the true measure of Solomon’s greatness was not in his wealth but in his wisdom and his dedication to God.

Overall, 2 Chronicles 9:15 provides a glimpse into the grandeur of King Solomon’s kingdom and highlights his wealth and military might. It serves as a reminder of the blessings that come from walking in obedience to God and the importance of using our resources wisely and generously for His purposes.
