2 Chronicles 10:5
“And he said unto them, Come again unto me after three days. And the people departed.”
This verse is part of a passage that describes the events following the death of King Solomon and the division of the kingdom of Israel. Solomon’s son, Rehoboam, became the next king. As the verse begins, Rehoboam is faced with a request from the people of Israel, who were burdened with heavy labour and taxation during Solomon’s reign.
Here are some key points we can draw from this verse:
Rehoboam’s response:When the people approached Rehoboam with their concerns, he asked them to come back after three days. This suggests that he needed time to consider their request and formulate a response. Rehoboam’s decision would have a significant impact on the future of the kingdom.
The people’s departure:After Rehoboam’s instruction, the people departed. They complied with the king’s command and left, waiting for his decision. This indicates their willingness to give Rehoboam a chance to address their grievances and hopes for a favourable outcome.
This verse sets the stage for the subsequent events in which Rehoboam seeks counsel from older advisors and young counsellors. Ultimately, he makes a decision that leads to the division of the kingdom. The ten northern tribes rebel against Rehoboam’s leadership and establish the kingdom of Israel under Jeroboam, while Rehoboam remains king over the tribes of Judah and Benjamin in the south.
