2 Chronicles 11:6

Posted on 18 May at 11:36

“He built even Bethlehem, and Etam, and Tekoa,”

Context:To understand the significance of this verse, it is important to consider the context. In 2 Chronicles 11, we find the account of Rehoboam, the son of Solomon, becoming king over the kingdom of Judah after the nation of Israel divided. Rehoboam faced opposition from Jeroboam, who became king over the northern kingdom of Israel. In response to this, Rehoboam fortified various cities in Judah to secure his position and protect his people.

Bethlehem:Bethlehem, mentioned in this verse, is a well-known city in the Bible. It holds significant importance as the birthplace of Jesus Christ, fulfilling the prophecy of Micah 5:In this context, the mention of Bethlehem highlights Rehoboam’s efforts to fortify strategic locations, including a city of great historical and future significance.

Etam:Etam is another city mentioned in 2 Chronicles 11:6. Its exact location is uncertain, but it is believed to have been in the area of Judah. Etam is also mentioned elsewhere in the Bible, such as in Judges 15:8, where Samson takes refuge there. Rehoboam’s decision to fortify Etam reveals his strategic approach to protect the borders of his kingdom.

Tekoa:Tekoa is the third city mentioned in this verse. It was a town in the region of Judah and held a significant role in the Old Testament. Tekoa is known for being the hometown of the prophet Amos (Amos 1:1). Rehoboam’s choice to fortify Tekoa indicates his intention to safeguard important towns and regions within his kingdom.
