2 Chronicles 11:13
“Moreover, the priests and the Levites that were in all Israel resorted to him out of all their coasts.”
This verse is a part of the historical account of Rehoboam, the son of Solomon, who became king of the divided kingdom of Israel after the death of his father.
Rehoboam ruled over the southern kingdom of Judah, while Jeroboam ruled over the northern kingdom of Israel.
In this particular verse, we see that the priests and Levites from all over Israel turned to Rehoboam.
To understand the significance of this verse, it’s important to look at the context and the events leading up to this point.
After the death of Solomon, Rehoboam ascended to the throne.
However, he faced a significant challenge.
Jeroboam, who had returned from Egypt, led a delegation of Israelites and demanded that Rehoboam lighten the heavy burden of labor and taxes that Solomon had imposed on the people.
Rehoboam initially sought counsel from the older advisers who had served his father, but he rejected their advice and instead followed the counsel of his young friends, which led to further unrest and division (2 Chronicles 10).
Consequently, ten tribes of Israel rebelled against Rehoboam’s authority and formed the northern kingdom of Israel, leaving Rehoboam with the tribes of Judah and Benjamin, which constituted the southern kingdom of Judah.
Now, in 2 Chronicles 11:13, we see that the priests and Levites from all over Israel, including the northern kingdom, chose to side with Rehoboam, the king of Judah.
This was significant because the Levites were responsible for conducting religious ceremonies, offering sacrifices, and teaching the people the laws of God.
Their support and allegiance to Rehoboam demonstrated their recognition of him as the legitimate king and their commitment to the worship of God as prescribed by the Law.
This verse also reflects the fulfillment of God’s promise to the tribe of Levi.
In the book of Deuteronomy, God had declared that the Levites would not have a portion of land like the other tribes of Israel.
Instead, they were chosen to serve as priests and ministers in the tabernacle and later the temple.
By turning to Rehoboam, the Levites showed their faithfulness to their calling and their willingness to continue their sacred duties, despite the political division.
In conclusion, 2 Chronicles 11:13 highlights the allegiance and support of the priests and Levites from all over Israel, including the northern kingdom, to Rehoboam, the king of Judah.
This verse demonstrates their commitment to the worship of God and their recognition of Rehoboam as the legitimate king.
It also reflects the fulfillment of God’s promise to the tribe of Levi to serve as priests and ministers among the people of Israel.
