2 Chronicles 14:7

Posted on 18 May at 11:37

Therefore hee said vnto Iudah, Let vs build these cities, & make about them walles, and towers, gates and barres, while the land is yet before vs: because wee haue sought the Lord our God, wee haue sought him, and hee hath giuen vs rest on euery side: so they built, and prospered. 2 Chronicles 14:7 (KJV)

Historical Context: This verse is part of the account of King Asa’s reign over the kingdom of Judah. Asa was a righteous king who sought to restore and strengthen the worship of God among his people. The passage records his decision to fortify the cities of Judah, a strategic move that reflected both spiritual confidence and practical wisdom.

Seeking the Lord: The verse records Asa saying, “Because we have sought the LORD our God…,” emphasizing the importance of seeking and relying on God in every undertaking. Asa recognized that divine guidance and favor were essential before embarking on any significant endeavor. This reminds us to seek God’s direction in our own decisions and projects.

Rest on Every Side: The passage continues, “…and he hath given us rest on every side,” highlighting God’s faithfulness in granting Asa and the people a period of peace and security. Their experience serves as a testament to the blessings that flow from seeking the Lord and walking in His ways, providing a season of tranquility and safety.

Building and Prosperity: In response to God’s favor and the peace they enjoyed, Asa and the people of Judah set about building and fortifying their cities. They constructed walls, towers, gates, and bars for protection, demonstrating a commitment to practical measures while acknowledging that their ultimate security rested in God. As a result, they prospered both in physical safety and overall well‑being.

Application to Our Lives: The verse encourages us to seek God’s guidance and trust in Him as we face challenges and undertake new endeavors. While we should take sensible steps to ensure our safety and well‑being, we must never neglect our reliance on God. When we seek the Lord with sincere hearts, He grants us rest, peace, and prosperity.
