2 Chronicles 15:13

Posted on 18 May at 11:37

That whosoeuer would not seeke the Lord God of Israel, should be put to death, whether small or great, whether man or woman. 2 Chronicles 15:13 (KJV)

Context: This verse is part of a larger passage describing the religious reforms implemented by King Asa of Judah. King Asa reigned over Judah for 41 years, during a time when the people had turned away from God and were worshiping idols. Asa sought to restore the worship of the Lord and lead the people back to Him. In the preceding verses, we read about the covenant that King Asa made with the people. He removed the idols and altars of foreign gods from the land, repaired the altar of the Lord, and gathered the people of Judah and Benjamin together. They entered into a covenant to seek the Lord with all their heart and soul (2 Chronicles 15:12). In verse 13, the text records that those who would not heed the covenant—every person throughout the land—were cut off. The language does not specify a death penalty applied uniformly to all individuals regardless of status or gender, but it does indicate a severe consequence for rejecting the covenant. It’s essential to understand this verse within its historical and cultural context. During the time of King Asa, God had given specific instructions to the Israelites not to worship any other gods or idols (Exodus 20:1‑6). The commandments given by God included the prohibition of idolatry, which led the people away from the true worship of the Lord. The severe response to idolatry reflected the seriousness of violating the covenant relationship between God and His people. In implementing these religious reforms, King Asa sought to bring the people of Judah back to the worship of the true God. The harsh outcome for those who refused to heed the covenant underscored the importance of fidelity to God’s law during that period. However, it’s crucial to note that this verse is not prescriptive for Christians today. In the New Testament, we see a different approach to dealing with those who do not believe or seek God. Jesus taught a message of love, forgiveness, and redemption. He came to seek and save the lost, and He calls us to follow His example by sharing the message of salvation with others (Luke 19:10, Matthew 28:19‑20). In summary, 2 Chronicles 15:13 reflects the severe consequences that were implemented during the time of King Asa to address the issue of idolatry. It reminds us of the importance of wholeheartedly seeking and worshiping the Lord, but we must interpret it in light of the broader teachings of the Bible, including the message of grace and salvation through Jesus Christ.
