2 Chronicles 18:9

Posted on 18 May at 11:37

“And the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat king of Judah sat either of them on his throne, clothed in their robes, and they sat in a void place at the entering in of the gate of Samaria; and all the prophets prophesied before them.”

Context:The verse is part of a larger passage in 2 Chronicles 18 that recounts the alliance between Ahab, the king of Israel, and Jehoshaphat, the king of Judah. They were preparing to go to war against the Syrians, and Ahab suggested consulting the prophets for guidance.

The Setting:The verse describes the scene where both kings were seated on their thrones in a void place at the gate of Samaria. This public location served as a gathering point where important matters were discussed. The presence of the two kings indicates the gravity of the situation.

Clothed in Their Robes:The mention of the kings being clothed in their robes signifies their regal authority. They were seated in a position of power and honor, representing their respective kingdoms. This detail emphasizes their stature and sets the stage for what follows.

All the Prophets Prophesied:The key event in this verse is the presence of prophets who were prophesying before the kings. In ancient Israel, prophets played a vital role in communicating God’s messages and providing guidance to the leaders and people. Here, the prophets were called upon to offer insight into the impending battle.

Implications:The fact that “all the prophets” were present suggests a sizable number of prophets, possibly indicating a concerted effort to seek divine guidance. However, the subsequent verses reveal that these prophets were false prophets who only prophesied what the kings wanted to hear. Micaiah, a true prophet of God, was summoned later, and his message was in contrast to that of the false prophets.

  • The importance of seeking God’s guidance:The kings recognized the significance of consulting the prophets to discern the will of God before going to war. As believers, we can learn from this example and seek God’s guidance through prayer, studying His Word, and seeking wise counsel in important decisions.
  • The danger of false prophets:The presence of false prophets in this passage serves as a warning. We should be discerning and test the messages we hear against the truth of God’s Word. False prophets may offer attractive or convenient messages, but their words can lead us astray from God’s will if we are not vigilant.
  • The value of true prophets:The contrasting messages of the false prophets and Micaiah highlight the importance of genuine prophets who faithfully convey God’s word. We should listen to those who speak in line with Scripture and are committed to upholding the truth, even if their message may be uncomfortable or challenging.
