2 Chronicles 23:5

Posted on 18 May at 11:38

And a thirde part shall bee at the kings house, and a third part at the gate of the foundation: and all the people shall be in the Courts of the house of the Lord. 2 Chronicles 23:5 (KJV)

Historical Context: To understand the significance of this verse, let’s first provide some historical context. This verse is part of the account of the crowning of Joash as the king of Judah. At the time, Athaliah, the wicked queen mother, had usurped the throne and killed all the potential heirs to secure her position. However, Joash, the son of Ahaziah, was miraculously rescued and hidden by the high priest Jehoiada and his wife Jehoshabeath. When Joash turned seven years old, Jehoiada initiated a plan to overthrow Athaliah’s reign and restore the rightful king to the throne.

Dividing the People: In verse 5, Jehoiada divides the people into three parts and assigns them specific tasks for the day of the coronation. One‑third of the people are stationed at the king’s house, one‑third at the gate of the foundation, and one‑third at all the gates of the house of the LORD. Each group had a specific role to play in this event.

Symbolic Meaning:

The King’s House:

The group stationed at the king’s house represents the king himself. It symbolizes the royal authority and the power of the king. Joash, being the rightful heir, was to be placed on the throne as the legitimate ruler of Judah. The people stationed at the king’s house signify the support and allegiance of the nation to their new king.

The Gate of the Foundation:

The group stationed at the gate of the foundation represents the foundational aspects of the kingdom. Their presence signifies the restoration of the rightful foundation upon which the nation was to be built.

The Gates of the House of the LORD:

The group stationed at all the gates of the house of the LORD symbolizes the protection and oversight of sacred space. Their presence ensures that only authorized personnel—priests and Levites—enter the inner sanctuary while maintaining order at the temple entrances, and let none enter into the house of the LORD, but the priests and the Levites that minister.

Application for Believers:

Faithfulness to God’s Anointed: Just as the people supported Joash as their rightful king, believers today are called to support and honor those whom God has placed in authority over them. This includes respecting and praying for leaders in government, church, and other spheres of influence.

Restoring Godly Foundations: The gate of the foundation represents the need to restore godly principles and values in our lives, families, and communities. As believers, we should seek to establish our lives on the solid foundation of God’s Word and strive for righteousness in all areas.

Prioritizing Worship and Relationship with God: The presence of the people at the gates of the house of the LORD reminds us of the importance of safeguarding holy spaces and maintaining proper reverence for God. Just as the guards protected the temple entrances, we should guard our hearts and minds against anything that would compromise our devotion to God.

In conclusion, 2 Chronicles 23:5 highlights the events surrounding the coronation of King Joash and provides valuable lessons about supporting godly leadership, restoring godly foundations, and maintaining reverence for God in our lives.
