2 Chronicles 24:7
For the sonnes of Athaliah that wicked woman, had broken vp the house of God, and also all the dedicate things of the house of the Lord, did they bestow vpon Baalim. 2 Chronicles 24:7 (KJV)
This verse belongs to the historical account of Joash, who became king of Judah at a young age. During his reign he repaired the temple of the Lord that had fallen into disrepair, restoring the house of God after a period of neglect.
Athaliah was the daughter of Ahab and Jezebel, two notorious figures in Israel’s history known for promoting idolatry and leading the people astray. After her son Ahaziah died, Athaliah seized the throne, sought to destroy the royal family to secure her own power, and introduced Baal worship that corrupted the religious practices of the nation.
The verse records that the sons of Athaliah “broke up the house of God” and gave all the dedicated things, intended for the worship of the Lord, to Baalim. While the biblical record does not specify that her sons personally performed these acts, it is clear that the temple suffered neglect and likely some desecration during the period of idolatrous influence.
When Athaliah’s reign was overthrown, Joash—who had been hidden away during her rule—became king at the age of seven. One of his first actions was to repair and restore the house of God, reinstating the proper duties of the priests, Levites, and singers according to the commandment given to David and Solomon. This restoration was a significant step toward reviving true worship and re‑establishing God’s presence among His people.
The influence of wicked individuals can have a profound impact on the spiritual state of a nation or community. Neglecting what is holy and dedicated to God leads to spiritual decay, while faithful leaders who restore proper worship can bring renewal. It is essential to recognize and remove any idols or false practices that have infiltrated our lives and hearts, returning to the worship of the one true God. Restoration and revival are possible through repentance, dedication, and the active efforts of God’s people.
In conclusion, 2 Chronicles 24:7 illustrates both the extent of corruption and idolatry that occurred during Athaliah’s reign and the subsequent opportunity for Joash to restore the temple and revive true worship. The passage serves as a reminder of the dangers of straying from God’s ways and the importance of actively seeking to restore and uphold what is dedicated to Him.
