2 Chronicles 26:18

Posted on 18 May at 11:38

And they withstood Uzziah the king, and said vnto him, It perteineth not vnto thee, Uzziah, to burne incense vnto the Lord, but to the priestes the sonnes of Aaron, that are consecrated to burne incense. Goe out of the Sanctuarie; for thou hast trespassed, neither shall it be for thine honour from the Lord God. 2 Chronicles 26:18 (KJV)

Historical Context: Uzziah, also known as Azariah, was one of the kings of Judah. He reigned for fifty‑two years and was generally known for his prosperous rule. In the latter part of his reign he became prideful and attempted to take on the priestly role by offering incense in the temple, a task reserved for the sons of Aaron.

The Significance of the Priests: The priesthood in ancient Israel was established by God’s command to Moses and was exclusively given to the descendants of Aaron from the tribe of Levi (Exodus 28:1). The priests were entrusted with specific responsibilities in the tabernacle and later in the temple, including offering sacrifices and burning incense. These duties were to be performed only by those consecrated priests.

Uzziah’s Trespass: Uzziah’s attempt to burn incense in the temple was a direct violation of God’s commandments. The act revealed his pride and disregard for the order God had ordained. By overstepping his kingly authority, he encroached upon the domain of the priests. The priests, understanding the seriousness of the transgression, rebuked him and commanded him to leave the sanctuary.

Consequences of Uzziah’s Trespass: When the priests confronted him, Uzziah became angry, but his disobedience brought immediate divine judgment. God struck him with leprosy, a disease that remained with him until his death. Consequently, he was isolated from society and lived in a separate house until he passed away.

Lessons from Uzziah’s Mistake: The account serves as a warning against pride and the temptation to overstep one’s boundaries. Though greatly blessed and successful, Uzziah allowed his achievements to breed arrogance, leading him to disregard God’s clear commands. His downfall reminds believers of the importance of humility and obedience to God’s instructions.

The Role of the Church: Uzziah’s attempt to perform priestly duties highlights the significance of the roles and responsibilities assigned within the body of Christ. Each member has been given specific gifts and tasks for the edification of the Church (1 Corinthians 12:4‑7). It is essential for individuals to recognize their respective roles and not assume functions designated for others.

In summary, 2 Chronicles 26:18 teaches the consequences of pride and the importance of respecting the boundaries established by God. Uzziah’s violation of the priestly duty resulted in divine punishment. The passage calls believers to humbly fulfill the roles entrusted to them, honoring the order God has set and refraining from taking on responsibilities not assigned to them.
