2 Chronicles 26:19

Posted on 18 May at 11:38

Then Uzziah was wroth, and had a censer in his hand, to burne incense, and while he was wroth with the priests, the leprosie euen rose vp in his forehead, before the priests, in the house of the Lord, from beside the incense altar. 2 Chronicles 26:19 (KJV)

Context: Before delving into the specific verse, it’s essential to understand the context of the passage. Uzziah, also known as Azariah, was one of the kings of Judah. He became king at the age of 16 and reigned for 52 years. Initially, Uzziah followed the Lord and prospered in his endeavours. However, his success led to pride, and he overstepped his priestly duties, which led to his downfall.

Disobedience: In this verse, we see Uzziah’s disobedience to God’s law. As king, he was not authorised to burn incense, which was a duty designated exclusively for the priests from the tribe of Levi. Uzziah’s anger toward the priests stemmed from his pride. By attempting to offer incense, he violated God’s prescribed order and disregarded the roles assigned to each individual.

The Severity of Uzziah’s Sin: Uzziah’s act of burning incense may seem insignificant, but it was a direct violation of God’s commandments. God had established a clear division between the roles of king and priest in Israel. The act of offering incense was a holy and sacred duty, reserved only for the consecrated priests. Uzziah’s sin was not only an act of disobedience, but it also displayed a lack of reverence and respect for God’s ordained order.

God’s Judgment: In response to Uzziah’s transgression, God’s judgment was swift and severe. As Uzziah stood before the priests with the censer in his hand, he was suddenly struck with leprosy on his forehead. This visible sign of God’s judgment not only humiliated Uzziah but also removed him from the presence of God in the temple. Uzziah was then driven out and lived as a leper until his death.

Lessons for us: Uzziah’s story serves as a warning about the dangers of pride and the consequences of disregarding God’s commands. It highlights the importance of humility and obedience in our relationship with God. We are called to honour God’s ordained order and respect the roles and responsibilities He has assigned to each of us. Whenever we are tempted to step outside of our God‑given boundaries, we must remember Uzziah’s example and seek to humble ourselves before God.

In conclusion, 2 Chronicles 26:19 teaches us the importance of obedience and humility before God. Uzziah’s pride and disobedience led to his downfall and serve as a reminder for us to stay within the boundaries established by God. Let us strive to honour God’s commands, respect His ordained order, and maintain a humble heart in all that we do.
