2 Chronicles 28:7

Posted on 18 May at 11:38

“And Zichri, a mighty man of Ephraim, slew Maaseiah the king’s son, and Azrikam the governor of the house, and Elkanah that was next to the king.”

This verse is part of the historical account of the reign of King Ahaz of Judah.

Ahaz was an ungodly king who did evil in the sight of the Lord, and his reign was characterised by idolatry and disobedience to God’s law.

In 2 Chronicles 28, we find that Ahaz was under attack from the kings of Israel and Syria.

The Lord allowed these neighbouring nations to punish Ahaz and the people of Judah for their disobedience.

In the midst of this crisis, we encounter verse 7, which describes the actions of Zichri, a mighty man of Ephraim.

Zichri, in a surprising turn of events, kills Maaseiah, the son of King Ahaz, along with Azrikam, the governor of the house, and Elkanah, who held a high position in the king’s court.

The reason for their deaths is not explicitly mentioned in this verse, but it appears that Zichri took matters into his own hands and committed a grave act of violence.

While this verse does not contain a direct moral or spiritual lesson, it serves as a reminder of the consequences of sin and the chaos that can result from a lack of obedience to God’s commands.

The entire chapter of 2 Chronicles 28 illustrates the severe consequences that befell Judah because of their unfaithfulness to God.

The nation faced military defeat, captivity, and suffering as a result of their sinful ways.
