2 Chronicles 28:16
“And Ahaz gathered together the vessels of the house of God, and cut in pieces the vessels of the house of God, and shut up the doors of the house of the LORD, and he made them altars in every corner of Jerusalem.”
Context:2 Chronicles 28 is part of the historical account of the kings of Judah. In this chapter, the focus is on King Ahaz, who reigned over Judah. Ahaz was a wicked king who led the people of Judah into idolatry and disobedience to God. This verse describes some of the actions taken by Ahaz that were contrary to the worship of the Lord.
Gathering and Desecration of the Vessels of the House of God:Ahaz collected the sacred vessels, which were used for worship in the temple of God, and he cut them in pieces. These vessels held significant symbolic and practical value in the worship of God. Ahaz’s action demonstrated his disregard for the sacredness of these objects and his lack of reverence for the God they represented.
Shutting Up the Doors of the House of the Lord:Ahaz closed the doors of the temple, preventing the people from worshipping the true God in His designated place of worship. By doing so, he sought to hinder the proper worship of God and replace it with his own false and idolatrous practices.
Making Altars in Every Corner of Jerusalem:Ahaz erected altars throughout Jerusalem, not for the worship of the Lord but for idolatrous practices. This action promoted the worship of false gods and encouraged the people of Judah to turn away from the Lord.
- Disregard for God’s Holiness:Ahaz’s desecration of the sacred vessels represents a profound disregard for the holiness of God and His worship. As believers, we should treat the things dedicated to God’s service with reverence and respect, recognizing the significance they hold in our worship of Him.
- Consequences of Idolatry:Ahaz’s actions led the people of Judah astray, promoting idolatry and false worship. This serves as a reminder of the consequences of turning away from God and seeking other gods or creating our own ways of worship. It can lead to spiritual confusion, division, and a departure from God’s truth.
- The Importance of True Worship:Ahaz’s attempts to replace the worship of God with false practices emphasize the importance of genuine worship. As believers, we should prioritize sincere worship of the Lord, seeking to honor Him with our hearts, actions, and gatherings. We must be cautious not to allow anything or anyone to hinder our worship of the one true God.
- The Dangers of Compromise:Ahaz’s decision to make altars in every corner of Jerusalem reflects compromise and a departure from God’s commands. It is a reminder that compromising our faith and accommodating false beliefs or practices can lead us away from the truth. We should remain steadfast in our commitment to God’s Word and not compromise our beliefs or values.
