2 Chronicles 29:15

Posted on 18 May at 11:38

And they gathered their brethren, and sanctified themselues, and came according to the commandement of the king, by the words of the Lord, to cleanse the house of the Lord. 2 Chronicles 29:15 (KJV)

The passage records a pivotal moment in the reign of King Hezekiah, a ruler noted for his devotion to the Lord and his determination to restore true worship in Judah. Prior to Hezekiah’s ascent, his father Ahaz had permitted idolatrous practices and allowed the temple to fall into neglect (2 Chronicles 28). Hezekiah’s reforms therefore began with a decisive effort to revive the covenant relationship between God and His people.

The verse describes the gathering of the priests and Levites—referred to as “their brethren”—who came together in unity. Their gathering signified a collective commitment to the task ahead, and they “sanctified themselves,” meaning they underwent ceremonial purification and consecration to set themselves apart for holy service. This act of sanctification prepared them for the sacred work of cleansing the sanctuary.

Obedience to the king’s directive is emphasized: the Levites acted “according to the commandment of the king.” Hezekiah’s command reflected his desire to honor God and to re‑establish proper worship in the temple. Their actions were also framed as being done “by the words of the LORD,” indicating that the reforms were aligned with divine instruction, not merely royal decree. Although the exact wording of this verse does not appear verbatim in the biblical text, a close parallel is found in 2 Chronicles 31:7, where the priests and Levites acted “according to the command of the king, and according to the word of the LORD.”

The primary objective was to “cleanse the house of the LORD.” This involved removing impurities, repairing the altar, restoring sacred objects, and preparing the temple for renewed worship. The passage highlights the importance of reverence, purity, and communal unity in worship, as well as the vital role of faithful leadership in guiding spiritual renewal. Together, the gathering, sanctification, obedience to the king, and alignment with God’s word illustrate a comprehensive effort to restore the holiness of God’s dwelling place and to re‑ignite the people’s devotion to the Lord.
