2 Chronicles 32:18
Then they cryed with a loude voice in the Iewes speech vnto the people of Ierusalem that were on the wal, to affright them, and to trouble them, that they might take the city. 2 Chronicles 32:18 (KJV)
And the servants of the king of Assyria went up, and spake against the LORD God of Jerusalem, and against his servant Hezekiah.
The verse is part of the account of King Hezekiah’s reign in the book of 2 Chronicles. During this time, Sennacherib, the king of Assyria, had invaded Judah and threatened to conquer Jerusalem. Hezekiah, a righteous king, sought the Lord’s guidance and took measures to fortify the city against the Assyrian army. Hezekiah and the prophet Isaiah prayed to God for deliverance, and God miraculously intervened by sending an angel to destroy the Assyrian army. Despite this remarkable victory, some of the Assyrian officials continued to speak against the Lord and Hezekiah.
Opposition to God: The verse highlights the ongoing opposition and blasphemy against the Lord God of Jerusalem. It reveals that despite the Assyrian army’s presence and threats, the officials continued to speak against God. This opposition serves as a reminder of the persistent nature of human rebellion and the tendency to challenge God’s authority even in the face of overwhelming circumstances.
Persecution of God’s Servants: The verse also mentions that the Assyrian officials spoke against Hezekiah, who was God’s servant. Hezekiah’s faithfulness to God and his efforts to lead the people in righteousness made him a target of slander and persecution. This aligns with the biblical theme of how God’s servants often face opposition and criticism from those who reject God’s authority.
