2 Chronicles 33:12

Posted on 18 May at 11:39

“And when he was in affliction, he besought the LORD his God, and humbled himself greatly before the God of his fathers”

This verse is part of the account of Manasseh, the wicked king of Judah, who reigned for 55 years. He was known for his evil deeds, leading the people of Judah astray and causing them to commit idolatry and engage in various abominable practices. However, in the midst of his affliction, Manasseh sought the Lord and humbled himself before Him.

Here are a few key points we can draw from this verse:

Affliction as a catalyst for seeking God:Manasseh found himself in a state of affliction, which could refer to either physical or spiritual suffering. It is often in times of trouble and distress that people turn their hearts towards God, seeking His help, mercy, and deliverance. In our own lives, affliction can serve as a reminder of our need for God and prompt us to seek Him earnestly.

Humility as a response to God:Manasseh’s response to his affliction was to humble himself greatly before the God of his fathers. Humility involves recognizing our own limitations, weaknesses, and sins in the presence of a holy and righteous God. It is an attitude of submission, surrender, and acknowledgment that we are dependent on God’s mercy and grace. Manasseh’s humility was a significant step towards restoration and reconciliation with God.

The God of his fathers:This phrase highlights the connection between Manasseh and the God of Israel. Despite his waywardness and the influence of idolatry, Manasseh recognized that the God he needed to seek and humble himself before was the God of his fathers-the God who had made a covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. This recognition shows that there was a remnant of faith and knowledge of God’s identity within Manasseh, which ultimately led him back to God.
