2 Chronicles 33:13

Posted on 18 May at 11:39

And prayed vnto him, and he was intreated of him, and heard his supplication, and brought him againe to Ierusalem into his kingdome. Then Manasseh knew that the Lord hee was God. 2 Chronicles 33:13 (KJV)

Context: To better understand this verse, consider the broader context. 2 Chronicles 33 recounts the reign of Manasseh, one of the kings of Judah. Manasseh was known for his wickedness, leading the people of Judah astray by promoting idol worship and practicing various forms of evil. However, in verse 10 the Lord warned Manasseh and his people of the consequences of their actions.

Repentance and Prayer: In verse 12 Manasseh humbled himself and “besought the LORD his God.” He recognized his sinful ways and sought God’s forgiveness. This demonstrates the importance of repentance and turning to God in prayer when we realize our wrongdoings.

God’s Mercy: Despite Manasseh’s history of wickedness, the Bible tells us that God was “intreated of him,” meaning He listened to Manasseh’s earnest supplication. This highlights God’s willingness to extend mercy and forgiveness to those who genuinely seek Him, no matter how grave their sins may be.

Restoration and Redemption: As a result of Manasseh’s repentance and prayer, God restored him to his kingdom in Jerusalem. God’s mercy and forgiveness brought about both physical and spiritual restoration, reminding us that no one is beyond God’s reach or His ability to transform lives.

Recognition of God’s Sovereignty: The verse concludes that Manasseh “knew that the LORD he was God.” Through this experience he came to a deep understanding of God’s power, authority, and sovereignty, leading him to renounce idol worship and acknowledge the one true God.

Key Takeaway and Application: 2 Chronicles 33:13 highlights the power of repentance, prayer, and God’s mercy. It shows that no matter how far we have strayed, God is ready to forgive and restore us when we sincerely seek Him. We are called to acknowledge our sins, humbly repent, seek God’s forgiveness through earnest prayer, trust in His ability to redeem, and surrender our lives to His sovereign rule, avoiding the pitfalls of idolatry.
