2 Chronicles 34:1
“Josiah was eight years old when he began to reign, and he reigned in Jerusalem one and thirty years.”
Context:The book of 2 Chronicles is a historical account of the kings of Judah, focusing on their obedience or disobedience to God’s law. Chapter 34 specifically highlights the reign of King Josiah.
King Josiah’s Background:Josiah became king at a young age, just eight years old. Despite his youth, he was known for his faithfulness and commitment to God. He reigned for 31 years, from 640 to 609 BC, and his reign is regarded as a period of religious revival in Judah.
Faithfulness at a Young Age:Josiah’s example teaches us that age is not a barrier to serving God and making a significant impact. Even as a child, Josiah demonstrated his dedication to the Lord and his people. His early reign shows that God can work through anyone, regardless of their age or circumstances.
Spiritual Revival:During Josiah’s reign, he initiated a series of reforms to restore proper worship and remove idolatry from the land. He repaired the temple, reinstituted the Passover celebration, and removed the idols and false gods from Judah. His efforts resulted in a spiritual revival among the people.
Importance of God’s Law:A significant aspect of Josiah’s reforms was the rediscovery of the Book of the Law (likely the Book of Deuteronomy). Upon hearing its contents, Josiah realised how far the nation had strayed from God’s commands and was convicted to bring about change. This highlights the importance of God’s Word in guiding our lives and steering us back to a right relationship with Him.
Application:Josiah’s story challenges us to seek God, regardless of our age or circumstances. We should be diligent in studying and applying His Word to our lives. Like Josiah, we should be willing to make the necessary changes in our lives and societies to align with God’s commands. Josiah’s example reminds us that our faithfulness to God can have a lasting impact on those around us.
