2 Chronicles 34:15

Posted on 18 May at 11:39

“And Hilkiah answered and said to Shaphan the scribe, I have found the book of the law in the house of the Lord. And Hilkiah delivered the book to Shaphan.” (2 Chronicles 34:15, KJV)

Context: To understand the significance of this verse, we need to consider the context. The verse is part of the account of King Josiah’s reign in Judah. King Josiah became king at the age of eight and reigned for 31 years. He was known for his righteousness and dedication to God. During his reign, he sought to restore the worship of God and purge idolatry from the land.

Discovery of the Book of the Law: In the verse, Hilkiah, the high priest, informs Shaphan the scribe that he has found the book of the law in the house of the Lord. This book is believed to be the Book of Deuteronomy or a portion of it, which contained the laws and commands of God given to Moses. It is unclear how the book was lost or hidden, but its discovery was a significant event.

Spiritual Renewal: The discovery of the Book of the Law marked a turning point for King Josiah and the people of Judah. When the book was read to Josiah, he tore his clothes in anguish because he realized how far the people had strayed from God’s commandments. He initiated a series of reforms to restore proper worship and obedience to God’s law.

Importance of God’s Word: The Book of the Law played a crucial role in shaping the faith and practices of the people of Israel. It contained God’s instructions for righteous living and provided a guide for their relationship with Him. The fact that the book was lost or neglected highlights the spiritual decline and neglect of God’s commandments in the nation.

Application: The verse teaches us the importance of God’s Word in our lives. Just as the Book of the Law had been lost and forgotten, we can sometimes neglect or overlook the Scriptures in our own lives. It serves as a reminder for us to seek God’s Word, study it, and allow it to shape our beliefs and actions. When we discover the truths of Scripture, it should lead us to repentance, renewal, and a deeper commitment to following God’s ways.

In conclusion, 2 Chronicles 34:15 showcases the discovery of the Book of the Law during King Josiah’s reign. This event sparked a spiritual revival and a renewed commitment to God’s commandments. The verse reminds us of the importance of God’s Word in our lives and encourages us to seek, study, and apply it to our own spiritual journeys.
