2 Chronicles 34:17
And they haue gathered together the money that was found in the house of the Lord, and haue deliuered it into the hand of the ouerseers, and to the hand of the workemen. 2 Chronicles 34:17 (KJV)
2 Chronicles 34 is part of the historical account of the reign of King Josiah in Judah. King Josiah was known as a righteous king who sought to bring spiritual revival to the nation. At a young age, he began to seek the Lord and initiated religious reforms by purging the land of idolatry and restoring the worship of Yahweh.
Prior to the events in verse 17, King Josiah had ordered the repair and restoration of the temple of the Lord. During the restoration process, Hilkiah the high priest discovered the Book of the Law (presumably the book of Deuteronomy) in the temple (2 Chronicles 34:14). This discovery marked a pivotal moment as the nation had drifted far from the commandments and statutes of God. Upon hearing the words of the Law, Josiah tore his clothes in repentance and sought guidance from the Lord.
In verse 17 it is recorded that the money found in the house of the Lord was gathered together. This money consisted of the offerings and tithes brought by the people for the maintenance and repair of the temple. The gathered money was entrusted to the overseers, who delivered it to the workmen. It was also given to the Levites and priests for the work of the house of God. These individuals were responsible for overseeing the repair and restoration work in the temple. This demonstrates King Josiah’s commitment to using the resources of the Lord’s house for their intended purpose and signifies his determination to restore the temple as a place of worship and reverence for Yahweh.
2 Chronicles 34:17 teaches us several important lessons. The temple of the Lord represents His presence and should be treated with utmost reverence and respect. It is a reminder to us today to honour God’s house, whether it be a physical building or our own bodies (1 Corinthians 6:19‑20). The money given for the work of the house of God serves as a reminder that the resources God has entrusted to us should be used wisely and for His purposes. We are called to be faithful stewards, whether it be our finances, time, talents, or other resources (Matthew 25:14‑30). Just as the Book of the Law was rediscovered and brought to light during Josiah’s reign, we should also seek to rediscover and study God’s Word diligently. The Bible is our guide for life and the source of truth and wisdom (2 Timothy 3:16‑17). King Josiah’s tearing of his clothes in repentance and his subsequent actions of reform highlight the importance of personal and national repentance when we realise we have strayed from God’s ways. It reminds us of the need to turn away from sin and return to God wholeheartedly (Acts 3:19).
In summary, 2 Chronicles 34:17 captures a moment of restoration and renewal in the reign of King Josiah. It reminds us of the importance of reverencing God’s house, being faithful stewards, rediscovering God’s Word, and pursuing repentance and reformation in our lives.
