2 Chronicles 34:20

And the king commanded Hilkiah, and Ahikam the son of Shaphan, and Abdon the son of Micah, and Shaphan the scribe, and Asaiah a servant of the king’s, saying,

2 Chronicles 34:20 (KJV)

This verse belongs to the account of King Josiah’s reign in Judah. Josiah became king as a young boy and later led a determined effort to repair the temple and restore true worship. During the repairs, Hilkiah the high priest found the Book of the Law, and its words moved the king to act urgently.

Josiah commands five named men to go and inquire of the LORD for him and for the people. Hilkiah was the high priest who discovered the book. Ahikam, son of Shaphan, later protected the prophet Jeremiah. Abdon, son of Micah, appears only here; the parallel account in 2 Kings 22:12 calls him Achbor, son of Michaiah, suggesting a variant name for the same person. Shaphan the scribe served as a trusted royal secretary. Asaiah is described simply as a servant of the king.

The king’s command shows his immediate response to God’s word. He did not treat the discovery as a private matter but gathered both religious and civil leaders to seek divine guidance. This cooperation between temple and palace highlights the shared responsibility of responding to Scripture. The specific roles—priest, scribe, royal servant—show that God’s work often involves people with different duties working together.

The parallel passage in 2 Kings 22:12 confirms the same delegation, though with a different name for Abdon. This small difference reminds readers that ancient records sometimes preserved alternate spellings or names for the same person. The mission itself, described in the following verses, was to inquire of the LORD, showing the nation’s need for repentance after years of idolatry. This pattern of godly leadership prioritizes obedience to Scripture.

Josiah’s example teaches believers to respond to God’s word with urgency and reverence. When Scripture exposes sin or reveals truth, the proper response is humble inquiry and action. The teamwork of these five men also demonstrates that God’s work often requires cooperation among people with different roles.

  • Seek God’s guidance personally when His word confronts you.

  • Value the contributions of both spiritual and civil leaders in obeying God.

  • Let rediscovered truth lead to renewed commitment, not mere acknowledgment.

The rediscovered Book of the Law transformed Josiah’s heart and the nation’s direction. God’s word still has power to shape and renew those who study it diligently. This verse invites readers to examine their own response to Scripture and to join with others in seeking the Lord together.
