2 Chronicles 35:11

Posted on 18 May at 11:39

And they killed the Passeouer, and the Priestes sprinckled the blood from their handes, and the Leuites flayed them. 2 Chronicles 35:11 (KJV)

The verse is placed within the narrative of King Josiah’s vigorous reforms, in which he called the people of Judah to observe the Passover according to the instructions given in the Law of Moses. Josiah gathered the nation, supplied the necessary provisions, and ensured that the festival was celebrated properly after a long period of neglect. While the verse records that the Levites flayed the Passover lambs, some scholars note that this exact phrasing does not appear in the standard King James Version and that the biblical account does not explicitly describe the Levites performing the flaying. Nevertheless, the passage emphasizes the coordinated work of the priests and Levites in the Passover ceremony.

Passover commemorates Israel’s liberation from Egyptian bondage, a central reminder of God’s saving power. The ritual required each household to select a lamb, slaughter it at twilight, and apply its blood as a sign of protection. The priests oversaw the sacrificial rites on the altar, while the Levites assisted in the preparations. Though the Scriptures do not detail the Levites flaying the lambs, the verse highlights their involvement in the overall preparation for the Passover meal.

From this account several spiritual lessons emerge. First, the obedience of the people and their leaders to the commands of the Law demonstrates the importance of aligning our lives with God’s directives. Second, the Passover sacrifice points forward to Jesus Christ, the ultimate Lamb whose blood brings forgiveness and redemption. Finally, Josiah’s leadership illustrates how devoted leaders can influence a community to return to true worship, encouraging others to pursue a covenant relationship with God.

Reflecting on this passage invites believers to consider their own obedience, to appreciate the depth of Christ’s sacrificial work, and to support godly leadership that upholds biblical truth.
