2 Chronicles 35:19

In the eighteenth year of the reign of Josiah was this passover kept.

2 Chronicles 35:19 (KJV)

This verse closes the account of a great Passover kept in Jerusalem during the eighteenth year of King Josiah’s reign. Josiah became king at age eight and ruled thirty-one years. He repaired the temple, removed idolatry, and restored true worship in Judah.

While the temple was being repaired, the high priest Hilkiah found the Book of the Law, likely Deuteronomy. When Josiah heard its words, he saw how far the people had strayed and began deep reforms. The Passover in this verse was part of those ongoing reforms, not a single event. The eighteenth year marks a specific moment in Judah’s history when the nation, under Josiah’s leadership, returned to covenantal obedience.

The Passover remembered Israel’s deliverance from slavery in Egypt, when the Lord passed over houses marked with lamb’s blood (Exodus 12:1-14). Keeping it according to the Law showed the people’s return to covenant obedience. The verse stresses the timing, marking a specific moment when the nation worshiped God rightly under Josiah’s leadership.

The parallel account in 2 Kings 23:23 confirms that this Passover was kept to the Lord in Jerusalem in the same year. This agreement shows the event’s importance in Judah’s history. The observance was a reminder of God’s faithfulness, redemptive work, and covenant with His people.

The Passover lamb points to Christ, the Lamb of God, who delivers from sin. Just as the blood of the lamb protected Israel, Christ’s sacrifice brings salvation to all who trust Him. This connection gives the verse lasting meaning for believers.

Josiah’s example calls believers to wholehearted devotion and serious obedience to God’s commands. Honoring God’s appointed times and maintaining a close relationship with Him are essential to spiritual life. The verse also reminds us that spiritual high points can be followed by trials, as Josiah’s later conflict with Pharaoh-necho shows (2 Chronicles 35:20-27).

This verse encourages believers to remember God’s deliverance and worship Him faithfully, even in times of decline. It warns that earthly success is brief, but faithful worship has eternal value. Let this Passover inspire renewed commitment to God’s ways.
