2 Chronicles 36:11

Posted on 18 May at 11:39

“Zedekiah was one and twenty years old when he began to reign, and reigned eleven years in Jerusalem.”

This verse is part of the historical account in the book of 2 Chronicles, which provides a record of the kings of Judah. Zedekiah was the last king to reign in Jerusalem before its destruction by the Babylonians.

To understand the significance of this verse, it is helpful to consider the broader context of the passage. The preceding verses describe the reigns of Jehoiakim and Jehoiachin, who were both unfaithful kings. Zedekiah, whose birth name was Mattaniah, was appointed by Nebuchadnezzar, the king of Babylon, as a vassal ruler over Judah. However, Zedekiah eventually rebelled against Babylonian rule, leading to the siege and destruction of Jerusalem.

Historical Background:Zedekiah’s Reign

Zedekiah ascended to the throne at the age of twenty-one, and his reign lasted for eleven years. This period was marked by political turmoil and spiritual decline. Zedekiah did evil in the sight of the Lord and failed to heed the warnings of the prophets, who urged him to submit to Babylonian rule. Instead, he sought alliances with neighboring nations and placed his trust in military strength rather than in God.

Lessons from Zedekiah’s Reign:

  • Consequences of Disobedience:Zedekiah’s disobedience and rebellion against Babylon resulted in dire consequences for himself and the people of Judah. The Babylonian armies laid siege to Jerusalem, leading to famine, destruction, and the eventual exile of the Israelites. This serves as a reminder of the consequences of turning away from God’s commands and seeking worldly solutions rather than trusting in God’s guidance.
  • The Importance of Submitting to God:Zedekiah’s story highlights the importance of submitting to God’s will and authority. The prophets consistently warned Zedekiah about the consequences of his actions, urging him to surrender to Babylon and acknowledge God’s sovereignty. However, Zedekiah’s pride and rebellion prevented him from recognizing the need to submit to God’s plans. This reminds us of the need to humble ourselves before God and trust in His wisdom, even when circumstances seem challenging.
  • God’s Faithfulness and Judgment:Despite Zedekiah’s disobedience, God remained faithful to His covenant with Israel. The destruction of Jerusalem and the exile of the Israelites were part of God’s judgment for their persistent rebellion and idolatry. However, God’s faithfulness is also evident in His promise to restore His people after seventy years of exile. This serves as a reminder that even in times of judgment, God’s ultimate plan includes redemption and restoration for those who turn back to Him.

Application to our Lives:

  • Submission and Obedience:Zedekiah’s example encourages us to submit ourselves fully to God’s authority and obey His commands. We should avoid the path of self-reliance and trust in God’s guidance and timing, even when facing challenging situations. Disobedience can have severe consequences, both in our personal lives and in our relationship with God.
  • Humility and Surrender:Zedekiah’s story teaches us the importance of humility before God. We must recognize that we are dependent on Him and His wisdom, rather than relying on our own understanding. Surrendering our will to God and seeking His guidance in all aspects of our lives is crucial for experiencing His blessings and avoiding unnecessary hardships.
