2 Chronicles 36:13

Posted on 18 May at 11:39

“And he also rebelled against king Nebuchadnezzar, who had made him swear by God: but he stiffened his neck, and hardened his heart from turning unto the Lord God of Israel.”

Verse: “And he also rebelled against king Nebuchadnezzar, who had made him swear by God: but he stiffened his neck, and hardened his heart from turning unto the Lord God of Israel.” (2 Chronicles 36:13, KJV)

Historical Context:The book of 2 Chronicles is a historical account of the kings of Judah, focusing on the southern kingdom after the kingdom split into Israel and Judah. This verse is part of the description of the final days of the southern kingdom of Judah before the Babylonian exile.

Rebellion against King Nebuchadnezzar:The verse refers to King Zedekiah, the last king of Judah before the Babylonian captivity. Zedekiah was installed as a puppet king by Nebuchadnezzar, the king of Babylon. However, Zedekiah rebelled against Nebuchadnezzar and made an alliance with Egypt, breaking the oath he had made in God’s name.

Swearing by God:The verse highlights that King Nebuchadnezzar made Zedekiah swear an oath by God. This indicates that the oath was made in the name of God, and it held great significance. Breaking such an oath was a serious offense, as it not only violated the trust of the Babylonian king but also demonstrated a lack of faithfulness to the Lord.

Stiffened Neck and Hardened Heart:The verse portrays Zedekiah’s response to Nebuchadnezzar’s authority and his command to remain loyal. Zedekiah stiffened his neck and hardened his heart, refusing to submit to the Babylonian king’s rule and turning away from the Lord. This attitude of rebellion and pride ultimately led to the downfall of Judah and the destruction of Jerusalem.

Turning away from the Lord:Zedekiah’s rebellion against Nebuchadnezzar was not just a political act but also a spiritual one. By rejecting Nebuchadnezzar’s authority, Zedekiah was essentially rejecting the Lord’s guidance and protection. Instead of humbling himself before God and seeking His wisdom and intervention, Zedekiah relied on his own strength and alliances, leading to disastrous consequences for the kingdom.
