2 Chronicles 36:22

Posted on 18 May at 11:39

Now in the first yeere of Cyrus king of Persia (that the word of the Lord spoken by the mouth of Ieremiah, might bee accomplished) the Lord stirred vp the spirit of Cyrus king of Persia, that hee made a proclamation throughout all his kingdome, and put it also in writing, saying, 2 Chronicles 36:22 (KJV)

Historical Context: This verse marks the end of the book of 2 Chronicles and serves as a transition to the books of Ezra, Nehemiah, and others that continue the narrative of the post‑exilic period. The Babylonian king Nebuchadnezzar had conquered Jerusalem, destroyed the temple, and taken the people of Judah captive to Babylon. After Nebuchadnezzar’s death, Cyrus, the king of Persia, conquered the Babylonian Empire and became ruler of a vast empire that included Judah.

Fulfilled Prophecy: The verse indicates that the word of the Lord spoken by Jeremiah was being fulfilled through Cyrus’s actions. Jeremiah had prophesied that the captivity of Judah would last seventy years (Jeremiah 25:11‑12). Historical records note the first deportation of Judahites in 605 BC (Daniel 1:1‑2) and the fall of Jerusalem in 586 BC, with Cyrus’s decree allowing the return of the exiles in 538 BC—a span of roughly sixty‑nine years; scholars often view the seventy‑year figure as a symbolic timeframe rather than a precise chronological count. This fulfillment demonstrates God’s faithfulness to His word and His sovereign control over history.

Divine Influence: The verse reveals that the Lord stirred up the spirit of Cyrus, the pagan king of Persia, to make a proclamation. This highlights God’s sovereignty and His ability to work through even secular rulers to accomplish His purposes. God’s influence on Cyrus is also referenced in Isaiah, where he is called God’s anointed (Isaiah 45:1) and described as the one who would rebuild Jerusalem and release the Jewish captives (Isaiah 44:28).

Proclamation of Cyrus: The verse mentions that Cyrus made a proclamation throughout his kingdom and put it in writing. This decree, detailed in Ezra 1:1‑4, permitted the exiled Jews to return to their land and rebuild the temple in Jerusalem. Such an act was unprecedented, as conquering kings typically kept captive nations under their control. Yet God moved Cyrus to allow the Jewish exiles to return and restore their nation, marking the beginning of the restoration period recorded in Ezra and Nehemiah.

Lessons for us: The fulfillment of Jeremiah’s prophecy and God’s influence on Cyrus remind us of God’s faithfulness and control over history. This passage encourages trust in God’s promises and recognition that He can work through unlikely sources to accomplish His plans. It also underscores the importance of obedience to God’s word, as the captivity and restoration of Judah were consequences of disobedience. Believers should be attentive to the leading of God’s Spirit and open to being used by Him in unexpected ways to fulfill His purposes. Exploring the surrounding verses and chapters provides a fuller understanding of the historical and theological context of 2 Chronicles 36:22.
