Ezra 2:14

Posted on 18 May at 13:59

The children of Biguai, two thousand fiftie and sixe. Ezra 2:14 (KJV)

The book of Ezra is a historical work in the Old Testament that records the return of the Jewish people from Babylonian captivity and the rebuilding of the temple in Jerusalem. Chapter 2 presents a meticulous census of the heads of households and the numbers of those who came back to the land. This verse focuses on the children of Bigvai, a family or clan leader among the exiles, and serves as a concrete record of that particular group’s presence among the returnees.

The verse states that 2,056 individuals from the family of Bigvai returned to Jerusalem. According to the wording in one of the drafts, this figure refers specifically to the men of the family, excluding women and children; consequently, the total number of persons—including women and children—would have been higher than the recorded 2,056.

While the text does not explain any special symbolic meaning for the number 2,056, the inclusion of such precise figures underscores the importance of careful documentation. The census demonstrates the fulfillment of God’s promise to restore His people to their ancestral land and provides a tangible testament to His faithfulness in preserving a remnant of Israel.

The detailed listing of names and numbers in Ezra 2 highlights several spiritual lessons. It reveals God’s concern for the details of His people’s lives and His orderly approach to redemption. Each family, no matter how small, plays a role in the larger divine plan, reminding believers that God values both individual and communal contributions.

Application of this passage is not limited to the ancient context. The principles of faithfulness, preservation, and divine providence are timeless. Readers can draw encouragement from God’s steadfast care for His people, recognize the worth of family and community, and trust that God’s providential hand is at work even amid challenging circumstances. By appreciating the meticulous care God showed in recording the returnees, believers are invited to trust Him with the details of their own lives, knowing He is a God of order and compassion.
