Ezra 2:21

Posted on 18 May at 15:22
Listen to this article

“The children of Bethlehem, an hundred twenty and three.”

Context: The book of Ezra is primarily focused on the return of the Jewish exiles from Babylonian captivity to Jerusalem and the restoration of the temple. Chapter 2 lists the names of the people who returned, along with the number of individuals from each family or town.

Bethlehem: Bethlehem was a well-known town in the region of Judah, located about five miles south of Jerusalem. It is particularly notable as the birthplace of King David and, several centuries later, Jesus Christ. In Ezra 2:21, it mentions the children of Bethlehem who returned to their homeland.

The significance of numbers: In this verse, it states that there were 123 individuals from Bethlehem who returned. While the exact significance of this number is not explicitly mentioned, numbers in the Bible often hold symbolic or representative meanings. However, it is worth noting that the primary focus of this verse is on recording the names and numbers of the returning exiles, rather than conveying a specific spiritual message through the number itself.

The faithfulness of God: The inclusion of Bethlehem in the list of returning exiles highlights God’s faithfulness to His promises. Bethlehem, being the birthplace of David and later Jesus, holds a significant place in salvation history. By ensuring that individuals from Bethlehem returned to their homeland, God continued to preserve the lineage and heritage leading to the Messiah.
