Listen to this article

The children of Neziah, the children of Hatipha. Ezra 2:54 (KJV)

The children of Bebai, one hundred twenty and three.

Context: The book of Ezra describes the return of the Jewish exiles from Babylon to Jerusalem after the seventy years of captivity. Ezra 2 lists the names of the people who returned with Zerubbabel, the governor, and Joshua, the high priest. It provides an account of the families and the number of individuals from each family who returned to Jerusalem.

Historical Background: After the Babylonian captivity, King Cyrus of Persia issued a decree allowing the Jewish exiles to return to their homeland and rebuild the temple in Jerusalem. Many families from various tribes returned, including the children of Bebai.

The Children of Bebai: Bebai was likely the head or leader of a family or clan among the returning exiles. While not much is known about Bebai and his family specifically, the mention of their descendants in the context of the return to Jerusalem highlights their participation in the restoration of the Jewish community.

Symbolic Significance: In biblical times, numbers often held symbolic significance. However, in this specific verse, the number 123 does not have a known symbolic meaning. It simply represents the count of individuals from the children of Bebai who returned to Jerusalem.

Importance of Individual Names: The inclusion of names and genealogical records in the Bible demonstrates the attention to detail and the importance of individual identities within the community of God’s people. It emphasizes the preservation of family lines and the recognition of each person’s place in God’s plan.

Remember, when studying the Bible, it is essential to consider the surrounding verses and the overall context of the passage to gain a deeper understanding.
