Then rose vp Zerubbabel the sonne of Shealtiel, and Ieshua the sonne of Iozadak, and began to build the house of God which is at Ierusalem: and with them were the Prophets of God helping them. Ezra 5:2 (KJV)

is at Jerusalem: and with them

were the prophets of God helping them. Ezra 5:2 (KJV)

Context: The book of Ezra records the events that occurred after the Israelites’ return from the Babylonian exile. In Ezra 5 we see the people, under the leadership of Zerubbabel and Jeshua, resuming the construction of the temple in Jerusalem.

Zerubbabel and Jeshua: Zerubbabel was a descendant of the Davidic line, served as governor of Judah under Persian authority, and led the Israelites in Jerusalem after the return permitted by King Cyrus. He oversaw the rebuilding of the temple during the reign of Darius I. Jeshua, also called Joshua, was the high priest at that time. Both men played key roles in restoring Jerusalem and the worship of God.

Building the house of God: The verse refers to the rebuilding of the temple that had been destroyed by the Babylonians in 586 B.C. The task was initiated by Zerubbabel and Jeshua together with the returning Israelites. The temple was more than a physical structure; it was the central place of worship and the symbol of God’s presence among His people.

Prophets of God helping them: Alongside the leaders, the prophets of God—specifically Haggai and Zechariah—were present to encourage and guide the people. Their ministry conveyed God’s messages and provided divine direction during the restoration.

Leadership and cooperation: Zerubbabel and Jeshua demonstrated strong leadership by taking the initiative to rebuild, and their collaborative effort exemplifies the importance of working together to accomplish God’s purposes.

God’s provision: The involvement of the prophets symbolizes God’s active participation in the project, providing both human leadership and divine guidance to ensure its success.

The significance of the temple: Its reconstruction signified the renewal of the Israelites’ relationship with God and the restoration of proper worship practices.

Overall, Ezra 5:2 highlights the faithfulness of Zerubbabel, Jeshua, and the prophets, and their commitment to rebuilding the house of God in Jerusalem. It reminds believers to persevere in God’s work and to seek His guidance in all endeavors.
