Ezra 5:5

But the eye of their God was vpon the Elders of the Iewes, that they could not cause them to cease, till the matter came to Darius: and then they returned answere by letter concerning this matter. Ezra 5:5 (KJV)

Historical Context: The book of Ezra recounts the return of the Jewish exiles from Babylon to Jerusalem and the subsequent rebuilding of the temple. After a period of halted construction due to opposition, the work resumes under the leadership of Zerubbabel and Jeshua, with later encouragement from the prophets Haggai and Zechariah.

Opposition to the Rebuilding: In Ezra 5:5 we see that the elders of the Jews faced opposition from those who wanted to stop the rebuilding of the temple. These opponents are referred to in the preceding verses as “the adversaries of Judah and Benjamin” (Ezra 4:1, in some translations).

God’s Watchful Eye: Despite the opposition, the verse highlights that “the eye of their God was upon the elders of the Jews.” This phrase emphasizes God’s providential care and protection over His people, indicating that He was watching over them and intervening on their behalf.

Unceasing Efforts: The verse further states that the opposition could not cause the elders of the Jews to cease their work until the matter came to Darius, the Persian king. Though attempts were made to hinder their progress, the Jewish elders persisted in rebuilding the temple, demonstrating determination and commitment.

Divine Intervention: The passage records that the elders eventually returned an answer by letter concerning the matter, and that the case was addressed through a letter sent to Darius. Their appeal reached the king, who later issued a decree in favor of the Jews, allowing the temple construction to resume (see Ezra 6:1‑12).

Lessons from Ezra 5:5:

  • God’s watchful eye reminds us that He sees and cares for His people even amid opposition and challenges, offering comfort that He is aware of our struggles and will intervene.
  • Perseverance in the face of opposition is modeled by the Jewish elders, urging us to remain steadfast in pursuing God’s purposes when obstacles arise.
  • Trusting in God’s timing is illustrated by the matter’s arrival at Darius in due course, encouraging us to wait for His perfect timing and intervention.
  • Faithfulness in fulfilling God’s calling is shown by the elders’ faithful execution of the temple rebuilding task, calling us to be faithful in the assignments God gives us despite opposition or difficulty.
