Ezra 5:13

the same

king Cyrus made a decree to build this house of God. Ezra 5:13 (KJV)

Historical Context: The book of Ezra is set during the period when the Israelites were returning from their exile in Babylon to rebuild Jerusalem and the temple. In Ezra 1 we learn that King Cyrus of Persia issued a decree allowing the Jews to return to their homeland and rebuild the temple.

King Cyrus: Cyrus was a powerful king who conquered Babylon and established the Persian Empire. Though not an Israelite, God used him as an instrument to fulfill His purposes and to facilitate the return of the Jews to Jerusalem.

The Decree: Ezra 5:13 records that in the first year of Cyrus, king of Babylon, a decree was issued to build this house of God. The decree specifically authorized the rebuilding of the house of God, i.e., the temple in Jerusalem. The temple was the central place of worship for Israel, and its reconstruction was essential for restoring their religious practices and identity.

Significance of the Decree: This proclamation demonstrates God’s sovereignty over earthly rulers. God’s plan to restore His people and His temple was accomplished through the proclamation of a foreign king who was not part of the Israelite community. It reminds us that God can work through unexpected means to accomplish His purposes.

God’s Faithfulness: The decree aligns with the prophecies of Jeremiah, who foretold the duration of the Babylonian exile and the eventual return of the Israelites (Jeremiah 29:10‑14). The fulfillment of that promise shows God’s faithfulness to His covenant and His willingness to restore His people when they turn back to Him.

Application: Ezra 5:13 encourages us to trust in God’s sovereignty even when circumstances seem unfavorable or uncertain. It shows that God can use unlikely sources to achieve His plans, giving us comfort that He is in control and will fulfill His purposes in our lives, just as He did for the Israelites.

Summary: The verse highlights King Cyrus’s decree to rebuild the temple in Jerusalem and underscores God’s faithfulness and sovereignty in fulfilling His promises. It serves as a reminder that God can work through unexpected means, urging us to trust in His plan for our lives.
