Ezra 6:3

Posted on 18 May at 14:10

“In the first year of Cyrus the king the same Cyrus the king made a decree concerning the house of God at Jerusalem, Let the house be builded, the place where they offered sacrifices, and let the foundations thereof be strongly laid; the height thereof threescore cubits, and the breadth thereof threescore cubits.”

Context: The book of Ezra is a historical account of the Israelites’ return from exile in Babylon to Jerusalem and the restoration of the temple. This verse specifically refers to the decree made by King Cyrus of Persia, allowing the Israelites to rebuild the house of God in Jerusalem.

Historical Background: The first year of Cyrus the king mentioned in the verse refers to the year 538 BC. This was when Cyrus issued a decree allowing the Jewish exiles to return to their homeland and rebuild the temple that had been destroyed by the Babylonians in 586 BC.

God’s Sovereignty: The verse highlights God’s sovereignty and His ability to work through human rulers. Despite Cyrus being a pagan king, God influenced his heart to issue the decree that would enable the restoration of the house of God. This fulfillment of prophecy demonstrated God’s faithfulness to His people.

The Importance of the Temple: The decree emphasized the significance of the house of God and its role in the Israelites’ worship and sacrifices. The temple was the central place of worship for the Jewish people, and its rebuilding was crucial for the restoration of their religious practices and identity as a nation.

Strong Foundations: The decree specified that the foundations of the temple should be strongly laid. This emphasizes the importance of a firm and solid foundation in our spiritual lives. Just as a sturdy foundation ensures the stability and durability of a building, a strong foundation in faith and obedience to God’s Word is essential for our spiritual growth and endurance.

Dimensions of the Temple: The verse provides the dimensions of the temple as instructed in the decree: sixty cubits in height and sixty cubits in breadth. These measurements indicate the size and grandeur of the temple, highlighting the importance of offering God our best and honoring Him with excellence in worship.
