And also let the golden, and siluer vessels of the house of God, which Nebuchadnezzar tooke foorth out of the temple which is at Ierusalem, and brought vnto Babylon, be restored, and brought againe vnto the temple which is at Ierusalem, euery one to his place, and place them in the house of God. Ezra 6:5 (KJV)

And also give them the vessels of the house of the LORD, the gold, the silver, and the vessels of copper, which have been taken out of the temple, that they may be set before the altar of the God of Israel.

Context: The book of Ezra records the events that took place during the restoration of Jerusalem and the rebuilding of the temple following the Babylonian exile. The Israelites, under the leadership of Zerubbabel and later Ezra, returned to Jerusalem with permission from King Cyrus of Persia to rebuild the temple of God.

In Ezra 6:5–6, King Darius of Persia confirms the decree of King Cyrus and orders the local authorities to return the golden, silver, and copper vessels that had been removed from the temple in Jerusalem and taken to Babylon. These vessels were considered sacred and had been used in the worship and service of God.

Restoration: The verse emphasizes the importance of restoration. The vessels of the house of God were taken away and kept in Babylon, but now they were to be returned and restored to their rightful place in the temple at Jerusalem. This act of restoration signifies the reestablishment of worship and the reinstatement of God’s presence among His people.

God’s Providence: The restoration of the golden and silver vessels was made possible through the intervention of God. King Cyrus and later King Darius were used as instruments in God’s hands to bring about the return of the Israelites and the rebuilding of the temple. This highlights God’s providential care for His people, even in times of exile and restoration.

Worship and Holiness: The golden and silver vessels were symbolic of the sacredness and holiness of God’s house. They were used in the worship and service of God, and their return emphasized the restoration of proper worship and devotion to God. It reminds us of the importance of approaching God with reverence and offering our worship in a manner that honors Him.

Faithfulness to God’s House: The directive to return the vessels “every one to his place” signifies the importance of order and structure in the worship of God. Each vessel had its specific purpose and place within the temple. This teaches us the significance of being faithful in our service to God, fulfilling the roles and responsibilities assigned to us within His house.

Historical Significance: The return of the vessels fulfilled the hope expressed in the early post‑exilic community that the sacred objects would be recovered and the temple services restored. Their restoration stands as a reminder that God’s promises to His people are trustworthy and that He fulfills His word, even in the midst of challenging circumstances.
