Ezra 8:20

Posted on 18 May at 15:22

“Also of the Nethinims, whom David and the princes had appointed for the service of the Levites, two hundred and twenty Nethinims: all of them were expressed by name.”

Historical Context: The book of Ezra focuses on the return of the Jewish exiles from Babylonian captivity and the rebuilding of the temple in Jerusalem. In this particular verse, Ezra is preparing to lead a group of exiles back to Jerusalem.

  • The Nethinims:

The Nethinims were a specific group of people who served in the temple. They were not part of the priestly or Levitical tribe but were appointed by King David and the princes for service to the Levites. The Nethinims were likely descendants of the Gibeonites who were assigned as temple servants during the time of Joshua (Joshua 9:27).

Significance of the Number: Ezra 8:20 mentions that there were “two hundred and twenty Nethinims.” The specific number may indicate the importance and organisation of this group. They were a significant part of the worship and service in the temple, assisting the Levites in their duties.

Personal Names: The verse also states that “all of them were expressed by name.” This suggests that each Nethinim was individually known and recognised for their service. It highlights the importance of personal identity and the value God places on individuals within the community.

  • Service: The Nethinims provide an example of dedicated service to God. They were not priests or Levites, but they faithfully served in the temple. We can learn from their example by finding ways to serve God and others, even in roles that may seem less prominent or glamorous.
  • Unity: The fact that the Nethinims were named emphasises the importance of recognising and valuing each individual within the community of believers. Just as God knew each Nethinim by name, we should seek to foster a sense of unity and personal connection within our churches and Christian communities.
  • God’s Appointments: The appointment of the Nethinims by David and the princes reminds us that God orchestrates various roles and responsibilities within His kingdom. Every task, no matter how small or seemingly insignificant, can have a purpose in God’s plan.
  • Recognition of Individuality: The mention of the Nethinims by name teaches us that God values each individual and their contribution to the work of His kingdom. We should remember that we are not mere numbers or faceless servants but beloved children of God with unique gifts and callings.

In conclusion, Ezra 8:20 highlights the role and significance of the Nethinims, a group of temple servants appointed by King David and the princes. Their service demonstrates the importance of individual contributions, unity within the community, and the recognition of each person’s value in God’s plan.
