Listen to this article

“The words of Nehemiah the son of Hachaliah. And it came to pass in the month Chisleu, in the twentieth year, as I was in Shushan the palace, Nehemiah 1:1 (KJV)”

Context and Background: Nehemiah was one of the post-exilic leaders of the Jewish people who lived during the Persian Empire. This verse sets the stage for Nehemiah’s account of his mission to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem.

The Author: The verse introduces Nehemiah as the author, providing his name and his father’s name, Hachaliah. Nehemiah was a trusted cupbearer to King Artaxerxes I of Persia, as mentioned in Nehemiah 2:1. He played a crucial role in the restoration of Jerusalem.

The Timing: The verse mentions the month of Chisleu and the twentieth year, which refers to the twentieth year of King Artaxerxes’ reign. This detail helps establish a historical context for Nehemiah’s account.

Shushan the Palace: Nehemiah states that he was in Shushan the palace at the time. Shushan was the capital city of the Persian Empire, and the palace referred to the royal residence within the city. Nehemiah’s position as a cupbearer to the king placed him in a privileged position.

Application and Lessons: a. Faithfulness in Secular Roles: Nehemiah’s role as a cupbearer to the king might seem unrelated to the task of rebuilding the walls of Jerusalem. However, it is a reminder that we can serve God faithfully in any position or occupation.

b. God’s Timing: Nehemiah’s mission to rebuild Jerusalem took place at a specific time during the twentieth year of Artaxerxes’ reign. This highlights God’s sovereignty and perfect timing in orchestrating events according to His purposes.

c. Awareness of Current Conditions: Nehemiah’s presence in Shushan the palace allowed him to have firsthand knowledge of the condition of Jerusalem. It is essential for believers to be aware of the state of affairs around them and respond to the needs with compassion and action.
