Nehemiah 2:18

Posted on 18 May at 15:21
Listen to this article

“Then I told them of the hand of my God which was good upon me; as also the king’s words that he had spoken unto me. And they said, Let us rise up and build. So they strengthened their hands for this good work.”

Context:The book of Nehemiah is set in the period after the Babylonian exile when the Israelites were allowed to return to Jerusalem. Nehemiah, a cupbearer to the king of Persia, receives news about the distress and ruin of Jerusalem’s walls. He is burdened to rebuild the walls and restore the city’s honour.

Nehemiah’s testimony of God’s favour:Nehemiah shares with the people about God’s hand being upon him. He recognises God’s goodness and intervention in his life, which led to the king granting him permission to go and rebuild Jerusalem’s walls. Nehemiah’s testimony emphasises the importance of acknowledging God’s involvement and blessings in our lives.

The king’s words:Nehemiah also tells the people about the king’s favourable response to his request. The king not only allowed Nehemiah to go but also provided him with letters for safe passage and timber from the king’s forest for the rebuilding project. The king’s support demonstrates divine favour working through human authorities. It teaches us that God can use even secular rulers to accomplish His purposes.

Let us rise up and build:When the people hear Nehemiah’s account, they respond with enthusiasm and commitment. They recognise the need to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem and respond positively, saying, “Let us rise up and build.” Their willingness to take action reflects their faith in God and their recognition of His hand upon Nehemiah.

Strengthened hands for the good work:The people not only express their determination but also actively engage in strengthening their hands for the good work. This phrase suggests that they committed themselves to the task at hand, ready to put in the effort and labour required to rebuild the walls. It signifies their readiness to overcome obstacles and work diligently for the restoration of Jerusalem.

  • Acknowledging God’s hand:Nehemiah’s example encourages us to recognise and acknowledge God’s hand in our lives. We should be grateful for His favour, provision, and guidance.
  • Testifying to God’s faithfulness:Sharing our testimonies of how God has worked in our lives can inspire and encourage others. It reminds them of God’s faithfulness and encourages their faith.
  • Responding with action:The people’s response to Nehemiah’s account teaches us the importance of taking action when God calls us to a task. We should not merely agree or express enthusiasm; instead, we should actively engage and work diligently to fulfill His purposes.
  • Unity and collaboration:Nehemiah’s account shows the power of unity and collaboration. When the people responded together with a common goal, they were able to overcome challenges and accomplish great things. We should strive for unity and cooperation within our communities and churches to achieve God’s purposes.
